Team building is an important part of FIRST Lego League (FLL). The kids on the team need to learn to work together and to be able to rely on each other during competition. They need to work through communication issues and frustrations and still stay on track. They need to learn to value the input of all team members.
During the year, we will do team building exercises as often as we can fit them in. At our first team meeting, we did a simple exercise using string, a washer, a tennis ball, and a cup. I split our team of 10 into two groups of 5, so I tied 5 pieces of string to each washer. Then I had the kids hold the strings tightly and put the tennis ball on the washer. The kids were instructed to lower the tennis ball down and into the cup without dropping it. It took each team several tries to get the ball into the cup, but I really liked how they worked together and kept trying until they were successful. It's always interesting to see who takes charge, what kindof process they use to solve the problem, their technique evolve over time, etc. Plus, we have fun at FLL, and this is a great way to make sure we don't get too serious. Tennis balls going everywhere is kindof funny.
I got the idea from here.
